Somizi Motaung (born 23 December 1972 in Soweto, Gauteng) is a South African media personality, choreographer, and actor.

He became popular for appearing in Sarafina! (1992), a musical and political film.

As a choreographer, he led several shows and events. Notable events he leads were opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Upon starring and participating in the choreography of Sarafina!, the door to other popular films and shows opened.

He appeared in the 1995 drama film Cry the Beloved Country and has also appeared in several television shows like Idol SA and V Entertainment.

He was born in Soweto, the township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa.

He was born into the family of Mary Twala, who was a veteran actress, and Ndaba Mhlongo, who was an actor and comedian.

Though his parents are late, at a young age, they influenced his exposure to the entertainment industry.

He had a brother, Archie, who was died after he was stabbed in 1985.


He was dating Palesa Madisakwane, an actress, and was still in another relationship with an unnamed man, he later opened up to be bisexual.

On the 19th of February 1995, Somizi and Palesa had their first child as Bahumi Madisakwane.

He later described himself as gay and the couple called their relationship a quit.

In 2017, rumors had it that he was in a romantic relationship with Mohale Tebogo Motaung, a South African model and entrepreneur. 

The following year, the couple confirmed the rumors after Somizi proposed to Motaung during their vacation in France.

On the 28th of September 2019, the couple became married and on the 30th of January 2020, they had their white wedding.


In June 2017, he released his autobiographical book titled Dominoes, Unbreakable Spirit.

He was a co-writer along with Lesley Mofokeng, a journalist and author Lesley Mofokeng.

He started his career in acting at the age of thirteen and appeared in the film Scavengers (1987).

In 1992, he appeared in the musical and political movie titled Sarafina! He appeared in other movies including Kein Himmel über Afrika in 1993.

Two (2) years later, he appeared in the movie Cry the Beloved Country in 1995.

In 1996, he also featured on the Tarzan: The Epic Adventures, a television series.

He got his ‘biggest judging duty’ after being appointed as the new judge for the eleventh (11th) season of Idols SA.

He was also a lead judge alongside Khabonina Qubeka on Dance Your Butt Off, a former SABC 1 competition show.

In 2016, he started his reality show titled Living the Dream with Somizi. The show aired on Mzansi Magic.

He has also being a host on several award shows including the SA Music Awards. He was the co-host for three (3) consecutive years (2016 through 2018).

In April 2018, he has featured roastee in Comedy Central’s annual roast special.

His first choreography work was on Sarafina, and since then has choreographed many notable events.

As a choreographer, he has appeared in several award shows and events like Miss SA, Metro FM, SA Music Awards, and the Channel O Music Video Awards.

He was also a dancer and choreographed for Joyous Celebration, a gospel choir. Somizi dropped his dance workout DVD ‘Grind! With Somizi’ in 2017.

On the 3rd of April 2017, he started his radio career as the co-host of The Fresh Breakfast Show, a Metro FM breakfast show.

In March 2019, the station reshuffled and he was moved to co-host #TheBridge.
